Ireland’s EV Future: SIMI Calls for Enhanced Government Support

With the Budget only a few weeks away – a week earlier than usual on October 1st – the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) are calling on the Government to increase it’s support of Electric Vehicle Adoption in Ireland. This presents an exciting opportunity to further accelerate the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

“SIMI is urging the Government to: extend the Benefit-In-Kind (BIK) incentive at current levels, which will help transition the business fleet faster and support the development of a used EV market; increase SEAI Grants back to 2022 levels until the EV market recovers; and accelerate the roll out of a fit for purpose national charging infrastructure. At this crucial stage in the EV transition, these measures will increase the sale of EVs, signalling their importance to consumers, boosting confidence and reassurance in electric vehicles.”

While EV sales have faced challenges recently, with 25% fewer Electric Vehicles sold in 2024 compared to the same time last year, the potential for growth remains immense. The shift to electric vehicles is not just a necessity to meet Ireland’s 2030 climate targets but also a tremendous opportunity to modernize our transport sector, reduce emissions, and lower fuel costs for businesses and consumers alike.

Ireland has made great strides in promoting EV adoption, with over 15,000 EVs sold up to August 2024. However, to reach the goal of 41,000 EVs as recommended by UCC Researchers, more action is needed. With the right support from the government, the momentum can be regained. Extending BIK incentives, reinstating SEAI grants to 2022 levels, and expanding the national charging infrastructure will pave the way for a brighter, greener future for all.

At this pivotal moment, we support SIMI’s call on the government to enhance the supports available. As Brian Cooke rightly puts it, “Budget 2025 presents an opportunity for Government to demonstrate its commitment to fleet electrification and is an opportunity they should not miss.

By embracing these measures, we can build on the progress made so far, inspire confidence among consumers, and ensure a vibrant future for the Irish EV market.
